UKMT Launches New Website

UK Maths Trust has launched its new website and brand refresh to better respond to its 2.5million annual users and its appeal to younger people.

The new design across desktop and mobile gives visitors a simpler experience and easy access to the information – volunteering, challenges and past papers – faster.

Geoff Smith, UKMT Chair says “I think that the new branding expresses our desire to reach all young people who enjoy maths. I hope that you all embrace our new look and feel.”

UKMT received over 31 website proposals from an expert tender process, UKMT’s digital steering group selected Northern Bear – the creative agency for charities that do good – as their preferred website agency.

The charity’s stakeholders (including trustees, volunteers, staff, teachers, and school coordinators) have been consulted throughout the process of the website and the brand refresh. Ensuring that decisions regarding the website and the brand have come through a user-centric approach.

Di Flatt, UKMT Managing Director says “This is the start of a more youthful and fresh identity for this fantastic volunteer-led charity. UKMT continues with its mission to advance the education of young people in maths.

We thank everyone for their amazing, expert, open and forthcoming approach to our refreshed website and brand.”

UKMT will continue to collect feedback from the community to continually improve its services and user experience.

UKMT & MoMATH Competition

In a significant stride for the world of maths, a remarkable development has emerged with the release of two groundbreaking papers on arXiv. These papers delve into the captivating realm of plane tessellations utilizing a singular irregular tile, known as “monotiles.” The spotlight is on the enigmatic “hat” and “spectre” monotiles, presenting an astonishing departure from conventional repeating patterns on a plane (see image below).

Diverging from the famed Penrose tiles, this innovation opens up new vistas in the world of tessellations. One of the four esteemed authors behind this pioneering work is none other than Joseph Myers, a dedicated volunteer associated with the UK Maths Trust (UKMT), who has played integral roles in the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) and the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

Expanding upon this breakthrough, UKMT, in collaboration with the prestigious National Museum of Mathematics based in New York, is excited to announce an upcoming Einstein Mad Hat Competition centred around these captivating monotiles. This unique initiative is set to bridge the realms of mathematics and art, inviting educators to foster unprecedented collaboration between mathematics and art departments.

Stay tuned for updates on this exhilarating journey at UKMT and the National Museum of Mathematics.
